It rained again, so I'm not doing much outside today
Yesterday, it was a balmy 75 F. I knew what was coming: a thunderstorm followed by a rapid temperature drop. It’s 36 degrees today and the ground is absolutely drenched. We’ve had 5” of rain in the last week. It’s normal for this time of year, but it’s still bumming me out. I don’t like winter, in case I haven’t made that clear.

Gardening isn’t always pretty. In fact, it’s often muddy, messy, weedy, and annoying, but the payoff is worth it for that stretch in early summer where everything is green and blooming. The fresh veg is the best part.
I did get my beds planted, though I didn’t seed everything I wanted to. My body is working hard to heal this hole in my jaw (I have huge teeth), and the pain is waking me up much earlier than I would prefer. As a result, I’m more tired than usual, and that’s a feat with perimenopause in full swing.
I got a couple of hours of work in, installed my pea trellis, and planted a few things. I still have work to do in the greenhouse, and a few things to direct sow in the garden.
I direct sowed:
Potatoes
Lettuce (first seeding)
Beets
Orange and Rainbow Carrots
Peas
Cabbage (first seeding)
Bok Choy
The greenhouse is proving to be a challenge. It isn’t air, or even water tight, so I’m trying to come up with workarounds to make it work. It was originally just a side shed on an old outbuilding that was built 40+ years ago from wood off a barn that was probably 100 years old at the time. We installed old aluminum frame windows and sided it with cedar. You can kind of see it one of the pics above. It’s not perfect, but it will keep frost from directly touching my plants. If I can get it to hold the smallest amount of heat and get my solar/battery/inverter situation sorted I’ll be good. We bought a new battery, but the sun hasn’t come out enough to charge it yet.
I hope your gardening plans are going as well as they can. February can be challenging, even in milder climates like mine, but don’t give up!
Until next time…
Jennifer
